Good morning dear colleagues,
The genomic selection (GS) allows to KNOW very early the genetic potential of the breeders. In certain countries developed, the experience showed that the GS is made possible thanks to fast technological innovations. For a better resource management animal genetics, all AFRICA must be affected by the applications of the GS. Through the bovine Genomic initiative of AFRICA, I invite all the persons in charge, especially the researchers, the animal sector in AFRICA to consider this new trend during the establishment of the future development programs of the animal sectors. So that AFRICA does not miss the train of the GS, it is necessary that it invests in the research and the formation in genetics and in genomics, and also in the construction and the equipment of the laboratories of genetics.

Good morning dear colleagues,
Let me start by appreciating those who put this platform in place; you have done a good job. I wish to urge us to take some effort to place genomics properly in the perspectives and peculiarities of cattle husbandry systems in Africa. The bulk of the cattle in the region are kept under various pastoral systems that need modifications for molecular genetical technologies to be optimally exploited.

Unanimously, Africa is rich in its animal genetic diversity, unfortunately this wealth remains badly exploited even unknown. The valorization of animal genetic resources passes necessarily by the use and the application of technology and the progress realized in the domains of the molecular genetics and the genetic evaluation. The scientific and technical initiatives large-scale as the project of the bovine Genomics of Africa can establish a spectacular support and a prospect for the bovine genetics in Africa. The genomic selection is based on an estimation of genetic value of the candidates for the selection from the information of markers covering all the genome. This tool requires the existence of a reference population among which phenotypes and genotypes are known and candidates to the selection. Mauritania as rest of the African countries is rich by its animal heritage, it lives several important domestic animal species on the economic, social and cultural plans. Concerning the cattle Mauritania possess essentially two local populations of zebu to know Maure Zebu known by its dairy potentialities which exceed in certain cases 10 liters a day and Fulani Zebu known by its capacities butchers. The implication of these two populations within the framework of this project of genomics of Africa will allow Mauritania to know better this autochthonous genetic material to raise(to draw up) a strategy of development and a scenario of improvement for its bovine resources. I am interested in this project.

In line with the comment of Yakubu mojid, yes their quite some research work done on cattle genomics in Africa but when you take them into consideration they were all trying to characterise them into groups with little or no any work with objective or aim for improvement using molecular techniques.much of the research works done were more on poultry and aquaculture.
